If there is a drug such as an antibiotics ordered by your dentist, you must take it regularly with paying attention to the taking frequency.  If you have an allergy or sickness and you take drugs regularly because of them, you must definitely tell about them to your dentist. If you use aspirin-like anti-clotting drugs before and/or after extraction, you must definitely state it as well. Teeth must be brushed properly and irrigated if possible. It helps to decrease the amount of bacteria and the risk of infection.

What Should You Pay Attention to After Extraction?

  • The tampon placed on the extraction hole must stay at least for 45 minutes.
  • After the tampon is thrown out, a new tampon must not be placed if it is not needed. One must be careful not to damage the clot.
  • The patient must not be gargle!
  • After extraction, the patient must eat nothing for 2 hours. After 2 hours, the patient must definitely prefer lukewarm food and drink, avoiding hot and cold food and/or drinks.
  • The patient must not smoke any cigarette for 24 hours. Smoking might be result in a damage to the extraction hole or inflame it. This situation called “alveolitis” causes a long-term ache.
  • The patient must not drink alcohol for 24 hours.
  • The extraction hole must not be touched or licked at any price. The patient must not spit either.
  • The patient must not use the part of their mouth where the tooth was extracted for 24 hours.
  • If there is an ache, a painkiller can be preferred except for aspirin. The patient must consult their dentist if possible.
  • The extraction hole must be kept clean and there must not be any food residue in it. After 24 hours from extraction, the extraction zone should be brushed with a fleecy toothbrush. The patient may utilize a gargle with salty water.
  • Blood leaking for 6-24 hours is accepted as normal. However, if there is an excessive bleeding or it has lasted more than 24 hours, a dentist must be consulted immediately.
  • Long-term swelling or ache must be reported to the dentist as well.
  • In the event of blood leaking, a wet teabag covered with gauze patch may be placed on extraction hole. Cushioning for some time like this might stop bleeding due to the astringent effects of some substances in tea.

What Can Be Done After the Extraction Hole Heals?

A bridge, prosthesis or an implant must be administered considering the situation of the extraction hole. Besides causing dyspepsia (digestive troubles), a missing tooth may lead to dislocation, curvature etc. Thus, it may cause chewing troubles.
